As you are probably aware by now, George and myself are attending our first ever craft fair on the 10th of May at the Colston Hall, Bristol. Below are some questions we recently answered about Midgins' in the run up to the Ship Shape Craft Fair. Who are you and what do you do?
We
are Amy and George, a young couple from Clevedon and together we
create unique textiles, home décor and plush characters, inspired by
wildlife and nature. Our aim is to provide you with fun and creative
homeware and gifts for yourself, your friends and family. We
encourage personalisation by giving you a range of fabrics and
colours to choose from, while also allowing you to provide a fabric
of your own. We also love upcycling, so some of our products will be
crafted from unwanted or second hand clothing.
How
and why did you get started with your craft?
Amy:
“Midgins' began after three years of studying fashion design,
fuelled by a desire to work from the comfort of my own home. After
graduating from university I was unsure of where to go next, but knew
I loved to sew.
In
the calm, following the manic few months spent creating my final
collection, I ended up going back to my textile roots, and from a
simple sketch and a trip to the fabric shop, I created my first plush
ukulele.
From
there, with the support and enthusiasm of my fiance George, we began
working together to create more designs and in October 2014 Midgins'
was launched on Etsy.”
Describe
your work space and a general day of working for you
We
work out of a room in the attic of our small town apartment. We both
have day jobs but spend all of our spare time designing, sewing and
developing our small business. A general day at home will begin and
end with coffee, while we work on prototypes, create products for
craft events, fill orders and promote on social media.
What's
your favourite item you have made or to make?
Our
favourite item is “Terry the owl”. He is the first product we
designed and made together and has been a firm favourite amongst our
friends and followers. As such, he has been the poster child of our
shop from the beginning.
What's
your favourite thing to do/place in Bristol?
Bristol
has a rich and diverse music scene, from large venues like the
Colston Hall to small independent venues like The Exchange and The
Fleece. We both love attending live music events in the city.
If you could switch your discipline and be instantly good at another craft, what would you choose and why?
Amy: “I would love to be good at weaving. I see so many beautiful pieces on instagram and pinterest and it is a craft I am itching to try.”
George: “Ice sculptures. Ice sculptures are awesome.”
